Things to keep in mind when publishing papers
- A good online video presentation:
How to Have a Bad Research Career
- Intro, methodology, !!! literature review !!!
- can't just prove ad hoc -> provable idea up front
- in experiments compare apples to apples
- have graphics/tables
- compare to everything that's relevant
- if have references that are not commonly available, include copies (with permission)
- be consistent in the notation
- make sure everything is clear
- be humble
- need justification and reason for choosing one method over others (for everything)
- be systematic - don't make assumptions & then prove (start with rigorous math)
- actually, start with an example to illustrate the need & the benefits of your approach
- discuss error & convergence speed
- quantify error/speed tradeoff
- quantify as much as possible
- examine boundary conditions
- what tradeoffs can be made that are not intuitive (e.g. trade off speed vs space)
- do not use: always, never, most often (the last one is not too bad if you have proof)
- be careful of title (names), wording (e.g. the estimated value, not "the value")
