hello hockey fans,

get ready for the 1997-1998 season!

i've booked the outdoor ice rink for playing hockey on
Mondays between 3:30 and 5 o'clock. we will be playing
Dec 1 through 15, and Jan 5 through Feb 23 (or later, if
the weather holds).

if you are interested in playing, please let me know and i
will add you to the mailing list, hockey@eecg.
everybody is welcome!

we really emphasize a very amateur level of play so that
everyone can get involved. in the past, many players had
never before played hockey and were not strong skaters.
also, very little cost is involved -- just get a pair of
skates and a hockey stick.

although we don't play rough at all, a small amount
of protective gear (eg: elbow pads, helmet) may be
helpful to prevent accidental injury.

guy

ps - the rink is located on Robert St., just SW of Bloor
     and Spadina.

hi,

according to our ice-spy, there is ice on the
rink now, but nobody is skating and the nets
are not presently out.

we should go out and give it a go anyway.

the rink-guard should be in at 3pm,
so we can probably get the nets.

see you there!

	THE GAME IS ON TODAY!

i called the AC and they said there shouldn't

today, and figure out a system for the future.

apparently they've been having some problems
coordinating things with the city. they were

hi,

we have a hockey game scheduled today.

some people have asked if we can begin
playing at 3pm rather than 4pm, so i'd
like to take a vote on that.

please read the story below and then
send me your vote.

(below, DAR == dept of athletics & recreation)

after the lockouts of the past 2 weeks,
i am happy to say that things should be
settled this week. i talked with the
DAR staff, who called the city and told
them that we have the rink reserved 4-5.
the city did not previously have this on record
because they received the rink schedule from DAR
before we booked our ice time, and they never
got an updated schedule. this was an important
oversight because it is the city employees that
open & close the rink. DAR does not have any
keys, and only has access to the ice because of
a deal between UofT (the landowners) and the city
(who own the facilities and run the ice). the
city supplies the rink guard to protect their
facilities and fulfill there deal with UofT.

DAR could care less whether we hop the fence.
but a bad report from the city (rink guards) will
be acknowledged by DAR and we can lose ice privileges.
DAR always warns me that "they listen to only one side
of the story, that of the rink guard" whenever i make
the booking. clearly, this is intended to instill fear
and respect for the city employees.

previously, there was a rink guard leaving and
locking the rink at 3pm. the next rink guard
was supposed to arrive at 4pm to open the rink
for the "14 & under" shinny players. since he
arrived late all the time, we were denied
significant ice time. he has probably been
told by the city to show up on time from now
on. but will he?

last week, numerous players suggested that we
begin our play at 3pm (since the ice should be
just closing). this may be risky if we get
there and the rink guard (1) kicks us out, or
(2) has already locked & left early.

so, starting at either 3pm or 4pm still holds risks.
send me mail to vote for 3pm or 4pm.
i'll make a decision based on popular vote.

guy

I just went and talked to the rink guard. He says that from now on there should
be someone there all the time -- he's on until 4 today, and then somebody is
coming to replace him. Anyway, he says if we're there at 3 we can play from
3 to 5, and he said that for sure it will be open.

I vote for 3!

also, tuesdays have been bad historically because

get ready to chant the Canadian mantra:

       "HOCKEY HOCKEY HOCKEY"

this is a general call for new members to our
'eecg hockey team'. we play a weekly game of
pick-up against ourselves. it's a really friendly
and fun game... let me know if you're interested
and i'll put you on the mailing list.

come and play if you have never played before, are curious
about playing, or are a seasoned pro and want to have some
fun. we have had lots and lots of first-time players, so
don't be shy. witness our 'hockey stick hall of fame' in
SF2206 for evidence of eecg members past.

best of all, it's free!!!!
just bring your skates and a stick.

i've booked weekly ice time 4-5pm on wednesdays, at the
Robert St. rink (south/east of spadina & bloor). the
first game will be THIS WEEK.

if you can't make wednesdays, let me know and i'll still
put you on the list. i might have to move the booking
day (i hear monday 4-5 is also open).

It seems everyone has gone home for the holidays so
there will be no "official" game tomorrow or the week

hi,

i just called the rink guard and he said the
rink is not cleared yet. i asked if we could
remove the snow ourselves & he said we have to
wait for the zamboni... he was told shovelling
it made it more difficult for the zamboni somehow.

he said to call back though.

i'm not happy... i'll press him more on the
issue when i call later. in the meanwhile,
DON'T go to the hockey rink until you here
from me that the game is on.

... swoosh! swoosh! ... ** C R A S H ** !

no those aren't the sounds of a skier hitting the trees...
it's the more familiar sound of an amateur hockey player
hitting the boards!

yes, friends, hockey is almost upon us. remember, this is
a truly amateur event meant for the uncoordinated like me :-)

let me know if you have any constraints about when you can
play next january/february. in the past, i've booked 1 hour
on a tuesday or wednesday around 3 or 4pm. if you aren't
sure of your schedule, even a rough one will help.

i'll be booking the ice next week or the week after,
so please get back to me soon.

i've put your name on the mailing list (hockey@eecg.toronto.edu)
because you were on it last year or i think you've expressed
interest in playing this year. if you know of someone else that
wants to play, just let me know. i'll also do a more general call
for players (emailing to cider) when we have a firm schedule.

WOOHHOOOOOOOOOOOO

FIRST HOCKEY GAME IS THIS THURSDAY!!!!! 3:30pm!!!!!

after weeks of playing phone tag i was finally
able to book the ice. it seems UTS has been
very aggressive and booked almost all available
time on the rink... so that leaves us with one
time slot....

we'll be playing hockey THURSDAYS from 3:30pm to 5:00pm.
sorry if you can't make it, but there really is no other
time available. the location is Robert Street, between
Bloor and Harbord (closer to Bloor, next to Dominion).

there's been a WONDERFUL CHANGE to the ice booking policy.
we no longer need a minimum number of players to show up to
hold the ice all to ourselves. (not that it's really going
to be a problem this year!) we no longer have to put up with
the "nuissance factors" that show up, so the game should be
safer and more fun.

i'd like to get to know everybody on this list (even though
i'm bad with names), so please feel free to stop and
introduce yourselves to me (a few times!) on the ice :-)

see ya thursday,
guy

We'll be playing our second game:
	Thursday @ 3:30pm.

The location is the Robert St. Rink, an outdoor
rink just west of Spadina, between Harbord and Bloor.
Just bring your stick & skates... (though a bit of
padding is a good idea if you have it).

Please confirm whether you'll be attending so I
have a rough idea of how many people will be playing.

is full of snow. a hockey game will not be
possible, the puck won't move!

let's wait until 4pm and i'll call the rink
guard again. the zamboni may arrive around
then, and the ice will be cleaned off.

believe they overbooked their ice time).

may be freezing out!

the game should be much slower paced this week (i hope).
it went far too fast last week ...

WARNING - HOCKEY IS ALMOST OVER

this friday will likely be the last game of the season.
a sign at the rink indicated the city will not be keeping
ice at most rinks past feb 26. some other rinks will have
ice for another 2 weeks but i'm not sure which ones they are.

nathan philips square will have ice till mid/late march.
in my experience, they've usually got a nice pond by then
from all the rain.

let me know if you are interested in playing
"one extra game" this week.

hockey this week is cancelled due to weather.
we'll be playing outside again next year.

there is some interest in organizing indoor ice
to continue play. if you're interested, or know
someone who is, let me know.

the cost would be roughly $10/hour and we'd need
around 15 or more people. it is difficult to get
ice time so they would probably be very late evening
games (ie, after 10pm). this is good because it frees
up some people who normally work during the day.

Depending on when it is offered, I might be interested in this. Our
playoffs are almost finished now, but my club team has games against
China and Germany on March 30 and April 1st that I need to stay in
shape for (our team can't afford to keep practicing).

DAR *just* got the rink schedule back from UTS
and they (UTS) were real ice hogs this year.
as a result i had to book the ice for the
only practical time available:

	Fridays 3:20pm-5:00pm

due to family obligations, i am not sure that
i can make it this week. please get your gear
together for next week though!

PS - RSVP if you want to play this week and
     i can arrange it.

Even though Guy can't make it tomorrow, is anyone interested to go play?
I was hoping to go, but it's more fun if there are a few others too.

the forecast is for +8C and rain.
i doubt we will be able to play
tomorrow, so i am cancelling
it for now.

if the weather improves we can still
give it a try.

As of 1:15, the guys at Varsity said the rink will be open (it was closed
last night). I have another number I'm trying to contact, but currently
there has been no answer. I'm either going to go to Robert Street if some
of you reply wanting to go, or I'll go to Rosedale at 7:30 for general
pickup.

Fellow hockey fans,

It has been 7 years since the first EECG outdoor hockey
games started. Inspired by the great Ralph Wittig, the
most illustrious of our ice-warriors (sadly, with the shortest
lived career!), we have indeed created our own Great Tradition
at this university.

Of course, this new tradition should continue year after
year and continue to inspire new people to try our finest
winter sport. What it needs is an ambitious organizer
to get new recruits, encourage them to play, and make sure
the ice is available. The fun, well, it all comes naturally :)

I'll send a general announcement to cider in
the next few days. For your own curiousity, I've
included a list below of all those who've been on our
mailing list, and the number of years of service!
Thanks to all!!!!!!

Our outdoor ice rink is located on Robert Street,
one street west of Spadina, halfway between
Harbord and Bloor (it is beside the Dominion
parking lot).

If you're still not sure, meet me at my

Hi,

Myself and some people play shinny hockey every friday nights from 12:30
AM - 4:00 AM. It costs between $ 10 - 15 depending on how many people
show up, and for 3.5 hours of ice-time it's a pretty good deal.

We play in Cheswood arena which is in the Sheppard-Allan RD area. Send me
an email if you require more info/interested in playing.

Yours truly,

Khushwinder Jasrotia
