Bali and Lombok

This is a sampling of the photos from our trip to Bali and Lombok in Indonesia during the summer of 1998. We spent one week on each of the islands with travel organized by Intrepid Travel, which specializes in low-impact touring with small groups. You won't find any resorts on this adventure! It is great for those who want to go somewhere with a backpack and explore for a while, but cannot afford to spend too long doing it. Simply put, we had a great time, and we highly recommend them, but only if you are the type that can stand roughing it a bit - mandies and ``sit-down'' toilets without seats come to mind!

A special selamat datang from Yu-Ling and me to our friends from the tours. We hope that these photos remind you of the wonderful time we had together.

To everyone else, these images do not do justice to the spectacular scenery and vivid colours that we witnessed. You really had to be there!!

Despite the news reports of unrest, these islands were far from the trouble spots. However, the news had obviously kept tourists away. This was good for us, but not so good for the people of Bali and Lombok. Tourism is the major industry in Bali, and to a lesser extent, Lombok. The people were very clearly hurting. The dramatic devaluation in the currency also makes it very inexpensive to travel once you get there. Please visit, and support the people and economy of these wonderful islands.

The images are about 20K to 70K bytes. I have tried to segment them into sets so that the pages are not too large or long. There is a total of about 2.3MB of JPEG images. If you are at the end of a slow link, you have been warned.

Enjoy!
