BG and BR are bidirectional?

In the lab handout, both BR and BG are shown to be
bidirectional pins. Is this really necessary?
The DMA engine should be able only to drive BR, so BR
should be a dedicated output pin. Simmilarly, I think
the DMA engine should be able only to detect BG, not
drive it, so BG should be a dedicated input pin.
Am I missing something?
